AMS Earthquake Structures

Albany Middle School Earthquake Structures

This project was the culminating activity in the study of earthquakes. Students planned, designed, and built a structure to be earthquake resistant. After the structures were completed, they were tested with simulated earthquake waves on a shake table (far right). Students observed and analyzed the designs to see which were the most earthquake resistant.

After the “earthquake” the students also analyzed and critiqued their own building, and rated themselves and their team on the success of their structure.

The building and testing of structures was an exciting close to their unit on earthquakes. The shake table testing was incredibly exciting, especially when buildings spectacularly collapsed.
