Ruth Ganong

plaque presentation 001Ruth Ganong former Albany Education Foundation board member died peacefully in her home on December 22, 2015.

Born on January 9, 1924 in Winnetka, IL. Ruth graduated from Smith College and went on to become the first woman to graduate from Boston Architectural College.

Ruth married William Francis Ganong in 1948 and raised 4 children. She dedicated her life to public service serving in many roles including Albany School Board President, Mayor of Albany.  In addition to serving on the AEF Board of Directors she was on the boards of the Albany YMCA and AC Transit.  She was involved for many years in saving San Francisco Bay.

Despite having polio as a child and being told she would never walk without a brace, Ruth enjoyed traveling throughout the world, jogging, bicycling, backpacking and sailing.

The Albany Education Foundation will miss Roth’s participation at our various events.  She was always seen at Barnes and Noble book sales, various fund raisers, and joyfully awarding grants to Albany teachers.
